A California woman was fatally struck by a train in the North Highlands area last Monday evening. The tragic incident occurred near Roseville Road and Walerga Road on Union Pacific Railroad tracks. According to reports, the collision occurred shortly after 5 p.m. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District confirmed the fatality. According to Union Pacific, the collision did not happen at a crossing, and investigations are ongoing to understand the circumstances leading up to the event.
According to the most recent data collected by the federal government, in 2022, California ranked number one among all states by a substantial margin in pedestrian versus train incidents, deaths, and fatalities. In 2022, there were 240 pedestrian versus train incidents in California with a total of 144 deaths and 96 injuries. The next closest state was Texas with 140 total incidents, 55 deaths and 85 injuries.
