(Martinez, California – April 23, 2019)
A female resident of Martinez was killed Tuesday evening about 7:05 PM, PDT, when she was struck by a Fresno, CA-bound Amtrak San Joachin passenger train. The passenger train had 75 passengers aboard a the time of the incident. The pedestrian was struck as she walked along double track Union Pacific rails in Martinez, CA.
Marolyn Sullivan, 36-years-old, was tragically killed in the incident. An Amtrak spokeswoman wasted no time in labeling the hapless victim as a “trespasser” and that she was walking “on tracks, on forbidden space” according to East Bay Times News Writer Rick Hurd who interviewed Amtrak’s Olivia Irvin for the story.
Contra Costa County Fire Protection District officials said the location of the tragedy was east of the IH 680 overpass in the vicinity of Escobar Street and Marina Vista Avenue.
Train number 718 is one of 54 Amtrak passenger and Union Pacific freight trains that roll through Martinez at a maximum allowable speed of 40 mph each day.
